The concept was there with Hunter and Mercy being tasked to save the trees that also act as gateways to various Underworlds, but I felt like it wasn't fleshed out completely. Maybe that's because this is book one of the series..? I'm not sure, but it had potential.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span><span>I felt like the writing was at a middle-school level; however, there was a (unnecessary) detailed sex scene that would be appropriate for older YA readers. I say unnecessary because I felt like the Mercy/Kirk relationship story line was a side thought or a filler episode that wasn't needed. I didn't find it to strengthen the plot at all. An additional side story involved Emily, Mercy's best friend, and that one also threw me for a loop. Along with that, it </span></span>was odd to me that Mercy and Hunter addressed their mom by her first name, but maybe that's a witch thing. Finally, the characters didn't seem like they were in high school based off their dialogue at times. It bothered me.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Overall, I'm giving <u>Spells Trouble</u> 3 leaves because, like I said, it had potential. I mean, I had to read it before I saw the movie (I have yet to see the movie). Besides the point - it tugged at my heart strings, was impossible for me to put down, and made me cry and want to throw the book across the room because "HOW COULD SHE DO THAT?"</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Instructions for Dancing</u> was no different.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I'm obsessed. I love Yoon's writing style, I love her character development, I love how this plot was partly inspired by the movie "Big" (and is even mentioned in Evie's story), I love how there was a ballroom dance competition involved. I'm serious... I'm obsessed.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I related to Evie as I'm not really a "romantic". I despise Valentine's Day, I make comments about couples PDA and dating..? Don't even get me started. Ironically, I happened to be reading this book at the perfect time in my life because it reminded me that endings are brief compared to everything else that unfolds in a relationship. I needed that reminder and I will continue to tell myself that truth when things get challenging.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">This book was filled with everything - family, friendship, love, loss, and heartbreak. But it was beautiful. Like I said, I felt all the feelings and wanted to yell at Nicola for what she wrote, but I would recommend this book in a heartbeat and would absolutely re-read it again. It was so, so good. Yoon is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA authors.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="92" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="92" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="93" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="93" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="90" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="90" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="89" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="89" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="90" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="90" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Instructions for Dancing</u> was published June 1, 2021. Mia is an aspiring ballerina in high school who has the opportunity of a lifetime to study ballet in Paris (*cue Hilary Duff singing "This Is What Dreams Are Made Of"). She just so happens to be accompanied by a classmate named Aubrey who she finds hard to get along with - only to get to the ballet academy and find out their roommates. Then, if you couldn't guess by the title, Mia finds herself swept off her feet by a French boy named Louis. Ballet or boy? Which will she choose?</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">That's not the only plot line, though. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">On top of being torn between chasing her dream or chasing a boy, Mia is determined to learn more about her family history to see if ballet truly is in her blood by searching one art museum after another to see if a famous artist did in fact paint a picture of her ancestor. While this was a nice addition to the story and did tie in to the time Mia spent with Louis, I had mixed feelings about it. Basically, I felt like there were two stories weaved into one.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">The writing style would best suit a middle school audience even though Mia is in high school. Personally, I found it choppy and really struggled to push through the first half of the book. The pace started to pick up when Mia and Aubrey decided to work together instead of against each other and really shocked me with the plot twist at the end. For those reasons, I am giving <u>Kisses & Croissants</u> three leaves.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Kisses & Croissants</u> was released April 6, 2021. I like to say I'm Wonder Woman (because, duh) but I've learned time and time again I can't do it all and I most definitely can't do it all alone. I take pride in being an independent woman who "doesn't need a man" and, if you're an enneagram person, I'm a type two - the helper. The word "no" is not a word I use often, although I am learning to use it more. Being a helper and being confident in your no are just two concepts that Elayne addresses in this book.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I found this to be a quick read with a lot of wise nuggets mixed in (some of which I've heard before, but it doesn't hurt to hear more than once - hence the 4 leaves rating) with personal experiences and interviews with other confident women. I found it to be a fast-paced, survival story about two teenagers and a young boy who are connected by the criminal pasts of their fathers. As I was reading, it felt like I was watching a movie. Anderson's writing is extremely engaging and keeps you on edge page after page.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">From the first chapter, you know this book is going to be tragic... but you can't stop reading. At least, I couldn't. I liked the multiple points of view where the reader sees Ava's thoughts while following Jack's story; however, I was annoyed with Jack's resistance towards help when that's what he so desperately needed. I'm not sure he nor his brother would've survived as long as they did in real life... it might've been a bit of a stretch. The ending seemed very sudden, but I was okay with it.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">While I found this to be a solid stand-alone story (wait, it's the first book in a series... does it need to be?) about a boy's determination to do anything to keep himself and his brother alive and together, it wasn't my cup of tea. For readers who enjoy haunting thrillers, this might be the book for you. Trigger warnings include: extreme violence, suicide/death and child neglect.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>What Beauty There Is</u> was released April 6, 2021. When I started reading, the idea with the main character becoming a groupie for a young, up-and-coming band with some cute male members was intriguing; however, the writing didn't sell it for me. I stopped reading about 20% of the way through. I couldn't relate to the characters and I wasn't a fan of Rose at all. The flow was extremely choppy and, ironically, broken. I hate being someone to not finish reading a book (or finish what I started in general), but this one made me walk away.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Not Broken</u> was released March 16, 2021</span>.</div>Alexis Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10644403205374950516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644041896460657005.post-35657644962292721532021-06-07T19:46:00.004-05:002021-06-26T19:07:52.687-05:00Book Review: Sunkissed<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg98NgHe-CMzbLnhaz0kPx7FS7HbDRHXO9BpEaidYZOUW04zFQqGA-0mHw3S8O6tFuOnVPXJWnsQs8glcY3D4ek7vFFmSr_aQVcEyh5Uv_LeGvm4OanSefldLJamnWR0nYxXRlQ0DKg5ydi/s1080/sunkissedbookreview.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg98NgHe-CMzbLnhaz0kPx7FS7HbDRHXO9BpEaidYZOUW04zFQqGA-0mHw3S8O6tFuOnVPXJWnsQs8glcY3D4ek7vFFmSr_aQVcEyh5Uv_LeGvm4OanSefldLJamnWR0nYxXRlQ0DKg5ydi/w640-h640/sunkissedbookreview.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>*I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*</i></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">This book had me hook, line and sinker within the first five chapters. I didn't connect to any of the characters. I thought both Mick and Veronica were selfish and rude beaches who never did anything wrong and Nico was well... Nico. (I don't want to give too much away). The "installs" made me think of Step Up Revolution (a positive) and the plot in general was very unpredictable (also a positive), it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I didn't vibe with the writing for some reason - if someone could help me figure out why that would be great - and the end was actually wicked disturbing. A solid quick read though.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Not sure if I would recommend this book... might be a cool tv show though to be honest.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>She's Too Pretty to Burn</u> was released March 30, 2021. The only thing I struggled with was the amount of time it took me to get into. The beginning was just too slow for me, although the build was essential for the plot. Descriptions throughout this book made you feel as though you were really there witnessing the horrors for yourself, and there was more than one time reading where I felt sick to my stomach.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">The romance between Mala and Edek brought about a sense of hope and every time they met up with one another, butterflies swarmed my stomach. A third character who stood out to me was Mala's closest friend and accomplice, Zippy. I loved her fire and resilience; same goes for Mala who stopped at nothing to save as many prisoners as she could by assigning them to specific work forces and/or literally giving them the clothes off her back. By the end of the story, I was getting Les Mis vibes (you might pick up what I'm putting down when you read it).</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Overall, this book was hauntingly beautiful, brought tears to my eyes, and made me wonder how so much of that torture was gotten away with. Ellie Midwood did a fantastic job telling the brave story of Mala and Edek and it is one that all should read. On that note, I think it would be a great literature circle book for high schoolers or book club pick for small groups.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>The Girl Who Escaped from Auschwitz</u> was released March 9, 2021. Bruce Cameron</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>Synopsis </b><i>(via Goodreads):</i> Bella was once a lost dog, but now she lives happily with her people, Lucas and Olivia, only occasionally recalling the hardships in her past. Then a weekend camping trip turns into a harrowing struggle for survival when the Rocky Mountains are engulfed by the biggest wildfire in American history. The raging inferno separates Bella from her people and she is lost once more. Alone in the wilderness, Bella unexpectedly finds herself responsible for the safety of two defenseless mountain lion cubs. Now she’s torn between two equally urgent goals. More than anything, she wants to find her way home to Lucas and Olivia, but not if it means abandoning her new family to danger. And danger abounds, from predators hunting them to the flames threatening at every turn. Can Bella ever get back to where she truly belongs? <u>A Dog’s Courage</u> is more than a fast-paced adventure, more than a devoted dog’s struggle to survive, it’s a story asking that we believe in our dogs as much as they believe in us.<br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b>My Thoughts:</b> I am ready to cry... because that's inevitable for me when I read Cameron's work. My mom pushed me to read <u>A Dog's Purpose</u> and I've read every single one of his books since.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>What are you waiting on this week?</i></div></div></span></div>Alexis Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10644403205374950516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644041896460657005.post-41074424171488968412021-05-09T18:37:00.000-05:002021-05-09T18:37:01.079-05:00Book Review: Five Ways to Fall Out of Love<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbEl8AxYUOBAM5qtDDLzIWrgmMRVNDA8BZVlc-4E1WaTttKHQLzWj_4_zi2hB087h2_kAgDUHpnSt25K7cZGZlStgMMj1ZeTNlFvAqtW2DEvpkds9A-fFOZljoYCevZ1ylCJMjVwmdwr94/s1080/fivewaysbookreview+%25281%2529.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbEl8AxYUOBAM5qtDDLzIWrgmMRVNDA8BZVlc-4E1WaTttKHQLzWj_4_zi2hB087h2_kAgDUHpnSt25K7cZGZlStgMMj1ZeTNlFvAqtW2DEvpkds9A-fFOZljoYCevZ1ylCJMjVwmdwr94/w640-h640/fivewaysbookreview+%25281%2529.png" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>*I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*</i></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">There were five ways I fell in love with this book:</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">1. Emily Martin's writing - The flow was great, the pace was solid; I was able to put myself in her writing as a character observing everything unfold (which is my favorite thing about reading a good book). I also liked how she split the book up into sections.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">2. The characters - All of them stole a piece of my heart, which is not something that happens often. I really enjoyed getting to know each one of them. I related to Aubrey the most and when you're able to connect to a character in a certain way, I think that makes the book <i>that </i>much better (if you know what I'm saying).</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">3. How relatable it is - This book legit sent me back to high school... and I didn't mind one bit.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">4. The smexy scenes - Very tastefully written for the target audience (some YA books take it too far, ya know?)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">5. The ending - So good; left me feeling content and happy inside.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Honestly, I got all the feels reading this book. I would highly recommend this read to my friends and - I don't do this a lot but - I would read it again.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><u><br /></u></div><span style="font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: center;"><u>Five Ways to Fall Out of Love</u> was released March 16, 2021. First, I found it hard to keep the whole Longstreet family organized in my head throughout the story. I was constantly asking myself, "Who is this again?" A family tree could've helped me keep them straight as I was reading, but I was reminded of who fit where at the end during the museum display's grand opening. Along with that, it was sometimes a challenge switching between three different POV's, but they all flowed nicely.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Other than that... I was obsessed. The stories of Everly, Augusta and Lilly were hauntingly enchanting and I clung to every word. I loved how the title ties into the story by the end and I got literal goosebumps when I read, "'The life we live is the life we choose with every decision of the heart, soul and mind. What do we do with our survival? Now what?'"</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Ugh.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">So. Good.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">But it gets better (in a morbid sort of way)...</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Surviving Savannah</u> was based on a true story. The <i>Pulaski </i>shipwreck was a legit shipwreck in 1838. In her author note, Callahan explains that this story was both fictitious and factual. She did intensive research to tell the story of the victims on the <i>Pulaski </i>- a story I would've never known had it not been for this book. All I ever heard about was the <i>Titanic</i>!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">If you love history and are as fascinated by shipwrecks as I am, <u>Surviving Savannah</u> is the perfect read for you. I devoured that book and have it on my "I-need-to-have-my-own-copy-of-this" list. I thoroughly enjoy reading Wilkin's perspective and interpretation of the Scripture and how she goes into depth about applying Scripture to our lives.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">The end of each chapter includes verses to reflect on, lit circle/Bible study questions, and a prayer. (All the more why it's perfect for a Bible study setting). Wilkin's writing is also easy to understand and follow and the structure of the book flows well.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I requested this book for two reasons. First, I liked Wilkin's writing (as mentioned above). Second, I wanted to know what ten words she would be referencing. For someone who is as spiritual as me - faith is really important to me - I failed to pick up on the title referencing the Ten Commandments. *cue face palm*. This book allowed me to look at the Commandments in a whole new light and I was screenshotting/highlighting passages like nobody's business. A few of my favorite quotes include:</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">"We must not make images of God because we ourselves bear the image of God." (pg. 42)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">"More than the deliberate cessation of work for the purpose of decompressing, Sabbath is the deliberate cessation of any activity that might reinforce my belief in my own self-sufficiency." (pg. 65)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">"What makes us discontented with our condition is the absurdly exaggerated idea we have of the happiness of others." (pg. 143)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Aren't those good nuggets?</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Ten Words to Live By</u> is packed with more like these and is a quick, thought-provoking read that inspires Christian readers to dig deeper into their faith and apply the Commandments to all aspects of their life.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Ten Words to Live By will be released March 30, 2021. At times, I even found her to be annoying. I also think there were a few characters thrown in last minute (ex: Lizzy and Chad) who didn't really play a major role until the last couple of chapters which made it feel like they were last minute decisions. Another character who threw me for a loop was her co-worker, John, who was continuously described to have suspicious behavior. Why he was acting "off" to Katie was never truly explained.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">This book was number five in a series (another reason why John's behavior was questionable because, wouldn't she have been working with him for some time?), but easily could've been a stand alone. Because of this detail, I wonder how much - if any - character development with Katie has unfolded.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">I just felt like there were a lot of gaps in the plot and I had to force myself to finish reading it. That being said, I do think this would be a good crime show episode. The branding found on the back of one of the murder victims was unique; the plot twist with the victims' mother was solid along with the additional fact of abduction thrown in there; and it was nearly impossible to determine who the real killer was until the end (most likely because of the endless list of characters, some of which were only in three or four chapters).</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">For these reasons, I am giving <u>The Fragile Ones</u> one leaf. I fell hard and fast for Elijah (love when that happens). The pace of the story was great and the plot twists were so freakin' fantastic. Oh, and Scarlet being an auto repair tech?! HECK YES LADIES. Once Plum got rolling, it was nearly impossible for me to put the book down. Seriously, a solid Young Adult read.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">When I marked this read as complete on Goodreads, I couldn't help but snoop on the reviews of others. I usually try not to do this before writing my own review, so I don't subconsciously steal the words/thoughts of other readers but... I was bummed to see there was only a handful of others who enjoyed Scarlet and Elijah's story as much as me (oh well, their loss). Personally, I found very few things to critique, but I'll mention the things that did stick out to me quickly.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">First, Scarlet staying in her relationship with douchecanoe Jack for so long. Although, I shouldn't be one to talk. We've all "been there, done that" right? Relationships are complicated, so I'll let that one slide. Second, why in the nut would her parents do what they did to her?! I'm being vague on purpose so I don't spoil anything, but oof would that throw a wrench in my family dynamic if I was in her shoes.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">A very easy 5 leaves for <u>Fight For Her</u>. I'm hoping that this isn't the last book written by Liz Plum.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></span><a href="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" style="font-size: x-large; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="118" src="https://images.vexels.com/media/users/3/159388/isolated/preview/94464fc16004981bdeee8b19edbac4de-leaf-sketch-by-vexels.png" width="118" /></a></div>Alexis Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10644403205374950516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644041896460657005.post-44462076988649765752021-03-10T09:00:00.000-06:002021-03-10T09:00:03.435-06:00Waiting on Wednesday (36)<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"> Waiting on Wednesday was a daily meme hosted by Jill at <a href="http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/">Breaking the Spine</a> and inspired Can't Wait Wednesday hosted by <a href="https://www.wishfulendings.com/">Wishful Endings</a>.
