Book Blogger Hop (2)

Image
The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Billy at  Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer .  It is a weekly prompt featuring a book related question.  The hop's purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. This week's prompt was submitted by Elizabeth from Silver's Reviews . "Do you use Goodreads to keep track of your books?" 110%.  I love seeing the progress read bar, what others are reading, and what books I have yet to read (which is a lot).  I don't have thoroughly organized bookshelves, because that would take a while, but I love admiring accounts who do. What about you?  Comment below!

Stacking the Shelves (13)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly bookish meme hosted by   Tynga's Reviews .  It's all about sharing books you've added to your shelves be it physical or virtual.  This means you can include books you buy in a  physical store, or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks. This week, I added one  book to my shelf! I received Not Broken from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  It is set to be released March 2021.

Waiting on Wednesday (34)

Image
Waiting on Wednesday was a daily meme hosted by Jill at   Breaking the Spine   and inspired Can't Wait Wednesday hosted by   Wishful Endings .  It highlights what newly released books us bloggers are most excited to read. Title:   This Close to Okay Author:  Leesa Cross-Smith Synopsis  (via Goodreads) :  On a rainy October night in Kentucky, recently divorced therapist Tallie Clark is on her way home from work when she spots a man precariously standing on the side of a bridge. Without a second thought, Tallie pulls over and jumps out of the car into the pouring rain. She convinces the man to join her for a cup of coffee, and he eventually agrees to come back to her house, where he finally shares his name: Emmett.  Over the course of the emotionally charged weekend that follows, Tallie makes it her mission to provide a safe space for Emmett, though she hesitates to confess that this is also her day job. But what she doesn't realize is that he's not the only one who needs

Book Review: Destination Anywhere

Image
*I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* I don't think I was even a chapter into this book before I wanted to buy my own plane ticket out of this country.  Too bad we're still in a global pandemic and that would be considered irresponsible... I really enjoyed Destination Anywhere .  I couldn't necessarily relate to the main character, Peyton, but I could feel for her.  Barnard touches on bullying, struggling to fit in, drug/alcohol abuse, and feeling obligated to do things to be accepted.  There were scenes where my heart ached and moments where I couldn't put this book down. The hostel setting was new for me and something I thoroughly enjoyed.  It was fun getting to know the folks who took Peyton under their wing one-by-one.  The flow of the story was very laid-back and the POV's from "before" and "now" were easy to follow.  At some points, it felt like the book was Peyton's diary while, at others, it felt like

A {Bookish} List with Alexis (2)

Welcome to the second installment of A {Bookish} List with Alexis! A {Bookish} List with Alexis is just that - a list encompassing a literary theme of some sort.  The list can be as long or as short as you'd like... just have fun with it! This week's theme is: Fairytale retellings that I love.  Retellings are some of my favorites - Wicked is one of my favorite Broadway musicals and Once Upon a Time is one of my favorite tv shows.  I love seeing what spins authors put on the stories I grew up listening to or watching courtesy of Disney. 1. Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce. I haven't read this book, or any others by Pearce, in a hot minute, but I remember being obsessed. 2. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This series is on the top of my to-finish list, but I'll probably just start over and re-read this gem. 3. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. Similar to The Lunar Chronicles, I have yet to catch up on this series.  Honestly, I'm not great when it comes to keeping up wi

Book Review: A Killer's Daughter

Image
*I received this book as an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* While I was scrolling through Netgalley mindlessly late one night (as one does) this cover caught my eye.  It's got a mythical siren vibe to it, so I was instantly intrigued.  Slap a title like A Killer's Daughter on there and you have me hooked.  I don't even remember if I read the description or not before I hit the request button.  I was excited for this read. The main idea behind A Killer's Daughter was unique - a FBI forensic psychologist is investigating a series of murders that are eerily familiar to her because they have similar call signs to the murders her own mother committed.  Said FBI agent, Nadine, doesn't trust anybody as she is unsure whether her unsub is messing with her on purpose or is simply inspired by her mother's serial killer tactics.  This book is full of twists and turns with one body being discovered after another, and Kernan leaves the reader questio

My favorite genre is Young Adult.  Lately though, I've been branching out more and exploring historical fiction and mystery/thriller. What about you?  Comment below! *Disclaimer: This question was posed for this time last year.  Apparently I can't read (how ironic).

Title: Talk Bookish to Me Author: Kate Bromley Synopsis (via Goodreads) : Inspiration can come from the most unlikely—and inconvenient—sources. Kara Sullivan’s life is full of love—albeit fictional. As a bestselling romance novelist and influential Bookstagrammer, she’s fine with getting her happily-ever-after fix between the covers of a book. But right now? Not only is Kara’s best friend getting married next week—which means big wedding stress—but the deadline for her next novel is looming, and she hasn’t written a single word. The last thing she needs is for her infuriating first love, Ryan Thompson, to suddenly appear in the wedding party. But Ryan’s unexpected arrival sparks a creative awakening in Kara that inspires the steamy historical romance she

Book Review: Attached

Image
I have to get something off my chest real quick... the magnets on the cover look like cigarettes to me. Please tell me you see it too. Oof, okay.  This book.  Strongly recommend. I didn't know that attachment styles were a thing, but, somehow, I stumbled on a quiz for it and when I was given my results with a small blurb describing my style I instantly wanted to learn more.  It's like taking an enneagram test and finding out which type you are.  You suddenly learn more about yourself and your behaviors and what makes you tick.  It makes me feel like I'm meeting a new version of myself (in a non-multiple personality disorder type of way.  Which, side note, that really interests me as well.  Another reading topic on my plate for sure). I liked how this book was setup, although I'm not sure there would be another way to order it now that I think about it.  Anyways, you get an intro to what attachment styles are, a taste of each individual style, learn how to make matches w

A {Bookish} List with Alexis (1)

Image
Happy Sunday and hello February! As I mentioned in my wrap-up post, I want to spice things up a little bit and, sadly, most of the hosts of the bookish memes I participate in no longer have active blogs.  I really miss adding my post to a mass list and checking out the blogs of others!  Thankfully, I still have Stacking the Shelves to do so!  This isn't really a bookish meme per say - if it turns into one, awesome ; if not, I won't be heartbroken - but the themes for my bookish lists are from post idea lists that I found, you guessed it, on Pinterest. A {Bookish} List with Alexis is just that - a list encompassing a literary theme of some sort.  The list can be as long or as short as you'd like... just have fun with it! Since it's officially February, I decided to go with the whole "love" POV.  So, without further ado, this week's theme is: Reasons why you love books / reading. 1. I love becoming a character in a book.   Do you ever get the feeling that yo

Book Review: Playing With Fire

Image
*I received this book as an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* I'm speechless. For starters, I am blown away by how this story was inspired by a true story - the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017.  Second, Henry really did her homework to make the scenes as realistic as possible... and, trust me, it was a crazy amount of homework. This book was featured in one of the emails I received from Netgalley and was listed under the mystery/thriller genre, but if there's a survival genre, I'd put it there instead.  Yes, this story most certainly was a thrill (because what could possibly go wrong next?!) but it wasn't too much of a mystery which what I was bracing for most.  Therefore, I was not prepared for the literature ride Henry was about to take me on. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, nor did I have time to envision what they look like, because I was more concerned about whether or not they were all going to make it out alive.  Add a dog t

Title:   First Comes Like Author:  Alisha Rai Synopsis  (via Goodreads):  Beauty expert and influencer Jia Ahmed has her eye on the prize: conquering the internet today, the entire makeup industry tomorrow, and finally, finally proving herself to her big opinionated family. She has little time for love, and even less time for the men in her private messages—until the day a certain international superstar slides into her DMs, and she falls hard and fast.   There’s just one wrinkle: he has no idea who she is.   The son of a powerful Bollywood family, soap opera star Dev Dixit is used to drama, but a strange woman who accuses him of wooing her online, well, that’s a new one. As much as he’d like to focus on his Hollywood fresh start, he can’t get Jia out of his head. Especially once he starts to suspect who might have used his fam

Book Review: Talking to Alaska

Image
*I received this book as an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* I'll admit, I requested this book immediately because of the dog... I have no regrets.  I apologize in advance for the vague review, but if I say much more I'll give it all away! I found Talking to Alaska to be a very unique book for several reasons.  First, Woltz navigates the discussion on invisible disabilities and does so beautifully.  Second, the two main characters - Sven and Parker - are connected unknowingly from the start in an unexpected way.  Third, the story celebrates how everyone is "weird" in some way, shape or form. Talking to Alaska also includes literature circle questions at the end making it the perfect book to incorporate in a middle school English curriculum. Generally speaking, Talking to Alaska is a quick, fun read told from two distinct perspectives that reminds you to embrace everything that makes you you and to not be afraid of the evil in the world becaus
